Spectacular Spotlight Sunday

Sunday's grand finale to the opening week of AT&T's Performing Arts Center was truly a historical and magical event. The weather was perfect with glorious sunshine and a cool Fall breeze. Flora Street was filled with thousands of people walking, laughing, smiling, playing in the water fountains and relishing in the beauty of what is now everyone's to enjoy. Seeing the lines of people waiting to get into the Wyly Theatre & Winspear Opera House was a true testiment to how Dallasites support the arts and humanities. It's an exciting time for our city and our future. One Arts Plaza is proud to be part of such an amazing urban arts district. Our plaza was filled with people dancing into the wee hours of the night to Hunter Sullivan's vibrant jazz band. Our restaurant patios were filled with people eating and drinking and relishing in all the festivities. The evening finale with the spectacular fireworks was truly magical and breathtaking...a site that is not often witnessed. All of downtown's skyscrapers seemed to bow and welcome its newest memebers. The Winspear's crimson red tile glowed proudly and pulsed like the heartbeat it now represents to Dallas. May the energy that sparked this day continue on for us all to enjoy.

Park to Link Uptown with Downtown Dallas

Yesterday Dallas celebrated the start of construction for the new 5.2-acre Woodall Rodgers Deck Park that will add a link between Uptown and Downtown Dallas. This $77 million park will be constructed above Woodall Rodgers turning the freeway into a tunnel.

I can't tell you how badly this city needs that park. It will completely change the complexion of the area.

iPhone Vid of Arts District

Michelle Carrig managed to grab some cool video with her new iPhone 3GS from the 46th floor of Chase Tower (DowntownDallas.org offices). You can see shots of the Winspear and Wyly.

Truth is I'm terrified of heights, and watching this video makes my palms sweat. I'm glad Michelle was up there and not me. This fall I'll be enjoying all the new venues in the Arts District from ground level.

Have to say though, I'm pretty impressed with the video power of the iPhone. May need to upgrade.

March is Busy

If you haven't noticed, things are hopping down at One Arts. We have a lot of events going on to welcome in the spring season. Tonight Richmond Punch will be performing from 7 to 9pm. Then Friday we have the Josh Goode band, and Saturday the Paul Harrington Quartet.

Thursdays in March offer you the chance to see performers from the Dallas Black Dance Theatre. If you haven't yet seen these young men and women perform, you are really in for a treat.

Keep up with all of our events by using our calendar.

Hope to see you out there!

Tasting Tuesdays

I have no problem paying $100 for a bottle of single-malt Scotch, but I don't polish it off over dinner and conversation. But what about wine? With today's economy, a lot of us can't afford to drop $50-60 on a bottle of red. So, what's the best way to discover good, affordable wines?

Well here's the solution: Tuesday nights from 5:30 to 8:30pm, Dali will feature six special wines that retail for under $20. These are Paul Pinnell-approved "Gem Wines" You can come in and have a free taste of any wine, or taste all five for $10.

Savor the Symphony

Last night we kicked off the 2009 Dallas symphony season with a rare and exclusive event inside one of the condos at One Arts Plaza. The stylish and intimate affair was wonderfully catered by 108 Catering, and featured entertainment by guitarist Terry Hankins. Guests sipped wine, mingled, laughed, and chatted about the exciting new season.

The Garden Gate provided floral decorations, and M&M Special Events furnished the tables, plates and glasses. Photographer Jerry McClure captured this moment in time beautifully.

This season the symphony features works by Tchaikovsky, Dvorak, Liszt, and performances by Branford Marsailis. Season at a glance.

We look forward to another great year of music.

44 Places to Go in 2009

Thanks primarily to the Dallas Arts District, Dallas made The New York Times list of top places to go in 2009. Ranked 17th out of 44, our city sits among such notable destinations as Brazil, Rome, Cologne, Star Island and Bhutan (quite an impressive group).

The positive change happening in the Dallas Arts District is drawing a lot of national press. People are seeing something in downtown Dallas they never thought possible.

"Everything is bigger in Texas, and the Dallas art district is no exception. Billed as 'the largest urban arts district in the United States,' the 19-block area gets bigger when the Dallas Center for the Performing Arts opens Oct. 12."

We're very excited about the next few years. As things continue to vigorously expand, our neighborhood and our quality of life will be all the better for it.
